This chain replaces Shimano XT and Ultegra road chains and is designed for both ROAD and MTB use.

Though the new naming convention eschews model titles, it's safe to assume that Shimano's CN-HG701 11-Speed Chain is designed with the balance of function and price found in the Ultegra drivetrain -- even though it's actually compatible with any of Shimano's 11-speed drivetrains. As with the other 11-speed chains in Shimano's arsenal, the HG701 benefits from Shimano's Sil-Tec ultra-low friction treatment on both the pin link and roller link plates. Sil-Tec dramatically reduces friction and noise while increasing the chain's longevity, so the HG700 chain runs faster and longer than the HG600 chain, which only has Sil-Tec treatment on its roller link plate. Conversely, it makes concessions to the HG900 chain, which adds Sil-Tec to the rollers themselves for an even smoother ride. The HG701's pins are also solid, for a claimed weight difference of 10 grams compared to the HG900. Please note that the CN-HG701 11-Speed Chain is direction-specific. When properly installed, the Shimano logo on the chain's links will face away from the bicycle.
